Researches have revealed that in 2003 and 2004, 71 % of the adult men and 67 % of the adult women in the US were overweight or obese, with an obese adult population of 33 %. The number of Black Americans is even higher: about 80 % of black women aged 40 or over are overweight and 50 % are obese.

Improving your cultural health includes physical health. If we Americans do not manage our physical health, we will not have to worry about our National Cultural Health, as we may not be hear to enjoy it.

Hi Aunk,

Hope you are doing well. I think as a sociaety we are poisoning ourselves in so many ways. That I believe is one of the many factors in our collective likelihood that 75% of Americans will be obese by 2015.....it's only 5 years from now.

Hetep and Respect mschargerfan, doing well, tnx for asking. I am back from the summer fun and ready for action.

You hit the urgency nail on the head. This is not a 20 year projection it is tomorrow.

Which, leads me to a timely political point.

If you want a reason to go to the polls in November and elect a Democrat, this is one more reason. The President and the Dems have moved on Health Insurance reform with some focus on prevention. The First Lady has launched her lets move program to help our children. On the other hand we have Anti-Vitamin McCain and the Confederate Party, that drinks tea (Republicans) opposed to getting Americans more healthy.

The Republicans are counting on us not showing up at the polls in an off year election. Let's prove them wrong again, we Americans do know what time it is. We do want each other to enjoy better health.

Elect no Republican for 100 years.

I think the recommended three balanced meals are way too much to eat.

Actually, eating 4 smaller ones is much better. You eat because its time to, not necessarily because you are hungry, and you wont eat as much in the first place.

Hey Tricky and Neisha!!! :-D

I was watching ABC News this evening and they were talking this and pointing out that Americans still do not get enough fruits and veggies in their diets. I fouind that to be interesting in spite of the heavy campaigning to get people to consume more produce.

Hetep and Respect Tricky Mona, you have a point.

I think the recommended three balanced meals are way too much to eat.

You are right, if you are a glutton three meals is to much. If you eat your three meals at the Golden Arches of death three meals is to much. There are some people who have been culturally poisoned into thinking that "fast food" is actually food.

We must return to eating whole food as the shiny ones (ancestors)did. We must stop taking Medplex chemically poisonous food and drugs.

Hetep and Respect Neish1920, what does 1920 stand for, your date of birth?

Actually, eating 4 smaller ones is much better.

Much better for some people. I eat 2 to 3 meals a day. I have fresh raw juice and protean for breakfast, maybe fruits for lunch and a big dinner.

The bottom line test is how does this work for you the individual. That is, the test of effectiveness should be visible and measurable (BMI, fat%, Vitamin D levels, Physical health, etc.).

about 80 % of black women aged 40 or over are overweight and 50 % are obese.

Not to take away from this statement. It is of great value. Those who created the standards are not Black and do not allow for the difference in physic. To some degree the standards for women amount to barefoot and pregnant. The standards were not set by women. Still this does not take way from the fact that there is obesity.

I watch for sales on fresh fruits and vegetables. It is usually what is in season. This can be aided by not spending all funds for groceries at one visit to the store. This helps to also stretch the grocery dollars and cuts down on the cost of getting the groceries from the store to home. By purchasing smaller amounts and making more trips, the groceries can be carried home by hand. Another aid is to purchase more foods that have to be prepared. These are usually the real foods like dairy, produce and meats. This allows for more control over how long the food lasts as well as the help of the family. Pay more attention to the diets before being brought to this country. It was not scraps from someone’s table.

Hetep and Respect Radio Free America, like your handle we need more of that right here in America.

Good point. I started shopping at my new local WholeFood store and find that you must shop more often if you by fresh.

My food shopping tip is, don't shop when you are hungry.

I shop for most of my produce at the health food store near my house, primarily because it is cheaper than the supermarkets out here in CA plus the quality is often better. The only time I get produce at the supermarket is if there is a good sale on it.

Not to steal thunder from this seed because this a good and critical topic, but I must ask this: what do you think of the situation in the inner city as far as fresh produce is concerned? There was an article here in the Union-Tribune not long ago about inner city residents having limited access to fresh fruits, veggies, meats, and the like. Here is the article: http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/sep/08/southeast-san-diego-looking-for-healthier-food/

I understand that in many inner cities across the US, the people who live in them have limited to no access to fresh fruits, meats and other things needed to live a healthier lifestyle. However, I do not see that as the case so much here in San Diego as the article claims. For example, there is a Food 4 Less supermarket in this area that is right on the trolley line that sells the items I mentioned. Not only that, there is a Costco and a Sam's Club nearby. There is also a large Mexican grocery store has a large selection of fresh meat and produce. so the people who reside there are not at a complete loss. Furthermore, many of the people who live in the area are either current or retired military and often they shop at the commissary. I know all of this because I live not far away from this area; as a matter of fact I have family still livng there plus I drive through there daily as part of my commute to work.

With all of that being said, I am for community and private home gardens. As a child, I helped my great-grandmother in her garden. I learned about the vegetables she planted like collards, corn, lima beans, green beans, blackeye and purple hull peas, squash, okra, and other delicious veggies. I learned about the process of palnting, from prepping the soil to the harvest. Unfortunately these things are missing from our kids and so many adults today.

I know this is a long post, but these critical topics merit discussion. The future of the US is at stake.

Here on the east coast we are fortunate to have a grocery chain rated in the top five in the country. They have excellent produce and purchase from local farmers who grow per the grocer's standards. It has pulled out of the inner city. Fortunately we had an African American mayor, who brought other stores into the city.

What has happened in the inner cities is for the grocery stores to pull out. This creates a transportation issue for the inner city residents. If a grocery chain keeps some of its stores in the inner city they bring the older almost spoiled produce from the suburban stores to in inner city stores. By then the produce is too old for anyone to purchase. This has created generations that have become accustom to not buying produce. It is not off the subject in that this not a healthy balanced diet and contributes to obesity. The transportation issue also hurts since fresh produce means more frequent trips to the grocer.
