Stay off that Cultural Third Rail

advertisement

This Culturally Healthy Holiday Greeting from me is designed to help you avoid Stepping on a Cultural third rail this holiday season, send a Culturally Healthy greeting to your friends and family.

Ramadan Karriem/Mubarak & Eid Al-Fitr (Sunni Muslims, Shi'ite, Nation of Islam), Happy Hanukah (if u Jewish), Merry Christmas-(Christians), Happy Kwanzaa & Hotep (African-Americans who're attempting to re-connect wit the Motherland's principles), Happy Civilization Day? (Nation of Godz and Earth), Wonderful Winter Solstice (Metaphysicians & Astrologers), Feliz Navidad (Latino Comrades), Happy New Year (Everybody).

geesh—thats a lot of inclusivity—lol!!! ;-)

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all.

Also, please include a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2009, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make our country great, and without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith, choice of computer platform, or sexual preference of the wishee.

(By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms and conditions.) This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for himself or others, is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher.

This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one Year, or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish, at the discretion of the wisher.

I wish you Cultural Health, wealth and happiness for the holidays.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

You got an Iphone for the holidays?  They're fun, aren't they?  I like being a geek.  And I bet you do, too!  It's an honorable label.

I wish you the best of holidays, Aunk.  I am currently sitting at the airport, waiting (hoping) (praying) (ok, begging) to get on a plane to go home for the holidays.  I am on standby and am #17.  My mom, dad, brother, sister in law, two nephews and niece are all back in Flint, MI.  And I want to go SLEDDING!  I don't think it will happen.

I have the possibility of three flights today.  10 am, 1 pm and 7 pm.  I've been here for two hours.

If I don't get home for Christmas, it only means that I was meant to stay in Phx. and spend Christmas with my doggie.  I already miss him.  It also means that I get to hang out on the Vine continuously.  I would be without internet at my parents' house for 9 days.  I brought my computer, and  figured I would just have them drop me off at a coffee shop for about five hours a day.

Hetep and Respect VMS (Not my old software), yes, Geeks is an honorable designation. I was a "Geek" before there was a word for it. I started working on 2nd generation computers long before the personal computer was a glimmer in their parents eyes.

You got an Iphone for the holidays?

Actually, I got the 16 gig 3g the week it came out. It is the best thing since sliced bread. I now have seven pages of applications, from a binary clock to a grand piano. I highly recommend it to Geeks and regular folks especially children and grand children. There is even a way to turn an Ipod Touch into a free worldwide phone for the cost conscious parent, grand parent or user.

Gee, I sure hope you catch your plane. let us know your progress. Are you on twitter?

I would be without internet at my parents' house for 9 days.

That would cause serious withdrawal symptoms in me.  I hope you find an Iphone in your stocking. If you can talk on a celle at your parents house with an Iphone you would be on-line!

LOL. Kwanzaa was created by a black racist, Ron Karenga, for the purpose of alienating black Americans from the traditions of Christmas, which he believed were too 'white' for Africans to admire and emulate.

Hetep John Russell, good to see you in the holiday spirit, LoL.

for the purpose of alienating black Americans from the traditions of Christmas,

Kwanzaa is a pro-African American holiday it is not anti-anything.

Cultural Literacy Minute: Use a capital "B" in Black when referring to the people and lower case 'b' when the reference is a color, as in black crayon.

JohnRussell, what holiday do you celebrate?

This is profound silliness. If American society was regulated by multiple calendars on a real as opposed to symbolic basis, there would be utter chaos. I respect other calendars, as other's, not America's. What do you have against the western world Aunk?

Hetep and Respect JohnRussell, I don't think you are grasping the Cultural Health message in the way it was intended.

This is profound silliness.

That is the idea, Chevy Chase is a silly guy. However, there is some profound Cultural Health information to be had, if you put your thinking cap on.

If American society was regulated by multiple calendars on a real as opposed to symbolic basis, there would be utter chaos.

I think you mis-read the point. I advocate no chaos. In my calculation, the recorded history of Classical African Civilization would make this the year c. 11908. ASCAC places the African year c. 6,000 and change. I do not advocate that my fellow Americans though out the Western Calendar and use the Central or Eastern calendars of their parents. but one should be aware and respectful of them.

I respect other calendars, as other's, not America's.

Respect is a good thing, "others" would expect no more of you.

What do you have against the western world Aunk?

I don't recall saying I was "against" anything in this article. The article promotes Cultural Health. I seem to remember you from the past? What do you have against Cultural Health?

P.S. you should put more fun in your spirit during the holidays. +[:-) notice the party hat on my smile. You should get yourself one of those fun hats.

Hetep and Respect Aunk, my practices where "holidays" are concerned in this country has evolved.  If I was going to participate in any formal activities it would be Kwanzaa.

I am at a point right now that rituals are of no meaning to me, there is a time and season for all things.  I am more introspective, this is a dormant time for me (cocoon) we will have to wait an see what will emerge.

I only left a message because you asked and I was one who voted, other.

The Holy Day's (holidays), especially the First Fruits Festivals. have traditionally been a time for introspection and reevaluation. I am confident what should emerge, will emerge good spirit.

Thanks for sharing, for it is in your sharing, that the rest of us have a chance for growing.

Hey Aunk - Happy holidays!  About your iPhone...I bought a touch instead, because I just didn't think I needed the phone part, and I love that thing!  Did you go through a phase of grabbing every application that looked even remotely cool?  I'm at the stage where I realize that I'm overdoing it a bit and have tried to become more judicious in what I get.

Anyway, I work in a school that has a very diverse student population, so I understand what you're getting at.  Wow, there are lots of holidays out there!  :)

I am getting a Touch for my daughter for Kwanzaa (I will put a culturally healthy book in it ) because she keeps using my Iphone.  She especially has grown attached to my fish tank app. always feeding the fish and giving the sick ones medicine. I had to tell her this is an Iphone not a Wephone.

Did you go through a phase of grabbing every application that looked even remotely cool?  I'm at the stage where I realize that I'm overdoing it a bit and have tried to become more judicious in what I get.

My girl friend is a Sikh so not too much into Christmas as a religious holiday, though I do get the usual "where is my Christmas present, John," every year.

When I tell her that she doesn't believe in Christmas so why should she get anything, I am met with the usual glare and occasional physical violence.
