Story one; Pilgrims sit down to eat with Native Americans, or Story two, Pilgrims sat down and eat Native Americans on "Thanksgiving". The question posed is, which is the real story? And how should you view and interact with the holiday thanksgiving?

In School, I learned that the Pilgrims had black hats and gold shinny buckles and sat down and had a wonderful meal with their friends the Native Americans in 1621. I thought this was the way things looked, because this is what my teachers and parents told me. This is not like Christmas, they wouldn't lie about this would they?

I was in middle age, before I learned that this was not the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help my teacher's God. I would not say they "lied", however, the Europeans that were invading Turtle Island did not have cloths as described. They whore much less flamboyant plain everyday work cloths. In addition, most Native Americans would tell you that these were not the friendliest folks that ever landed on Turtle Island.

Historians Joel A. Rogers, Dr. Rev. Ishakamusa Barashango and others report that 44 of the Pilgrims died in their first winter in America due to laziness and mental illness. Further, they report that not only did they fail to take the advice of the Native Americans regarding planting and providing for themselves. They actually stole corn from, killed and would eat the Native Americans and each other.

See the following quote from Captain John Smith (1580-1631) "So great was our famine that a savage we slew and buried, the poorer sort took him up again and ate him; and so did divers ones another boiled and stewed with herbs. And one amongst the rest did kill his wife, powdered her and had eaten part of her."

The General History of Virginia Fourth Book Page 294 (1606-1625)

So what is the real story of Thanksgiving? Did European Americans eat with Native Americans or did European Americans eat Native Americans?

In Closing, let me point out that the reason for informing you about the "The Two Stories of Thanksgiving", is to cause all Americans to think more deeply about this important American holiday. Should we stop celebrating Thanksgiving, No! Thanksgiving should and can be a Culturally Healthy event. As a general proposition families getting together to celebrate family unity, and the harvests of family and friends for the year, is a good thing.

However, we must have an accurate picture of the past, if Ma'at (Truth, balance) is to be served in the present and the future. So the bigger question is, what stories do we tell our children, regarding early American relationships to Native Americans. This holiday is a time to ask ( or re-ask) ourselves, What is, and what ought to be, our political, social and spiritual relationship to Native Americans?

See the Cultural Literacy Minutes below.

1. Who were the good and bad guys in American Cowboy and "Indian" movies of the 1960's and earlier? Note: your answer to the above question will tell you something about your cultural orientation to Native Americans.

2. "Indian" = DoubleSpeak (Cultural Poisoning) - Antidote = Native American, Indigenous People, Mohawk, Chippewa, etc.

3. There are also Black Indians among us. This is the Third Story of Thanksgiving, click here.

To view a discussion with Native Americans and other Americans that has been going on for many years visit this link. WARNING This is the old Wild West of the Internet before spell check and before I knew anything about writing.

Our (Americans) relationship to our Native American brothers and sisters has not been Culturally Healthy. I have reactivated your ancestral memory about three of the stories, there are many more, learn about them. It is the Twenty First century, Obama is the President Elect, God is in her heaven and we now have the tools to cure this dis-ease.

It starts with you. So what are you going to do about it?

Interesting that you write this tale of two Thanksgivings.  A similar article was written on the same topic at www. xicanopwr(dot)com /2008/11/the-real-first-thanksgiving-revisted/

Hetep and Respect No sympathy, Thanks for the 411, I will go check it out. In the Cultural Health business every holy day (Holiday) is an opportunity to improve Cultural Literacy. I have been writing about The Two Stories from back in 20the century. As you can see it has now grown to three stories.

It seems that people really do resort to extemes when they are starving. The story of Donner Pass is another example.

Where is the antidote for "Cultural Poisoning"? As you say many people innocently pass on untruths because they do not know it is untrue.

Hetep and Respect Dr. Know. Which Cultural Poisoning  are you referring to? Just like in medicine a specific disease has a specific antidote.

Where is the antidote for "Cultural Poisoning"?

H&R Dr. Know, sometimes I'm slow.

The antidote to the false or less then full story of Thanksgiving is the truth. There were three landings by the Virginia company, the Mass. landing and "meal" interaction was last not first.

I somewhat agree was my vote. I do not believe that these pilgrims, escaping England for religious freedom were the monsters everyone has been portraying them to be.

There were tribes of Indians that were peaceful and unfortunatly they were taken advantange of.  Then there were tribes of warriors who collected scalps. They would wipe out whole  villages , men women and children. Attack wagon trains, to soak the sand with blood, leaving bodies with bloody, bare skulls shining in the sun. The Tribes in Canada allied with the French and great massacres of English settlements followed.

I have read a lot about the plight of American Indians this past weekend on the internet  and not one has even mentioned this side.

Your premise of them "escaping from England for religious freedom" is another of the "cultural poison" you have been given. They wanted to force their practices on everyone else. Some went back to England when Oliver Cromwell took over for a time.

They were not satisfied with practicing their religion in England without inflicting it on their neighbors. They wanted to force their religion on everyone else. The last thing they wanted was "religious freedom" they wanted "religious conformity".

I agree Dr Know, Does this make them bloodthirsty monsters? Spain conquered lands to the south and converted thousands upon thousands of Mayans ,Aztecs as well as many others to catholicism They remain Catholic to this day.

The preists built missions up the west coast to spread their religion and gave the people agricltural tools that transformed many tribes from hunting and gathering into ones that could reap a crop or two during the year.

Back to your comment, we still have the same "cultural poison". It comes in the form of Born again Christians and Jehovahs Witnesses. I have a sign on my door that says " No Solicitors or JW's". Even though I don't think they are out to harm me in any way.

I lived in the south for many years. They had blue laws. You couldn't buy certain things on Sunday. The people that made these laws were wrong to oppress others but that didn't make them murderers and rapists, and those who disageed.

Was the rest of my comment untrue?

I didn't finish my last comment. It should have read, Those who disagreed could have done so without collecting scalps.

The scalp collecting was started by the French as a way to pay for killing British. Until then the Native Americans had not done such a thing.

The "conversion" was brought to the Americas by the same people who sponsored the Spanish Inquisition. They were NOT tolerant of any dissention. Whole settlements were wiped out rather that tolerate those "dens of iniquity". After all, God had given the example for them in the handling of Sodom and Gomorah.

Hetep and Respect kenyon you are a good example of a person suffering from understandable large doses of Cultural Poisoning. See your symptoms reproduced below.

I somewhat agree was my vote. I do not believe that these pilgrims, escaping England for religious freedom were the monsters everyone has been portraying them to be.

They invaded Turtle Island and murdered 50 million indigenous people. How should history view them as angles? How do the Jews view Hitler?

Then there were tribes of warriors who collected scalps. They would wipe out whole  villages , men women and children. Attack wagon trains, to soak the sand with blood, leaving bodies with bloody, bare skulls shining in the sun. The Tribes in Canada allied with the French and great massacres of English settlements followed.

Someone has Culturally Poisoned you with the Idea that indigenous people defending their land against invaders are the bad guys.

Thanks for sharing your vote and explaining your reasoning this is very instructive to our readers and I hope to you also. What is your answer to question number one:

1. Who were the good and bad guys in American Cowboy and "Indian" movies of the 1960's and earlier? Note: your answer to the above question will tell you something about your cultural orientation to Native Americans.

Thank you in advance for your answer.
