One day after Barack Obama's first visit to the White House as President-elect, we speak to the Pulitzer-winning novelist Alice Walker. In a recent open letter to Obama, Walker writes, "Seeing you take your rightful place, based solely on your wisdom, stamina and character, is a balm for the weary warriors of hope, previously only sung about."
Cultural Poisoning is not just perpetrated by crimes of commission. Omission is also a powerful tool of the Cultural Terrorists. As a result few Americans know that the White House was built by Blacks.
Alica Walker's letter is of great Cultural Health value in that it promotes Cultural Literacy.
Yeah, but what about his white ancestors? What about them "cracking the whip" to get the whitehouse finished? Nobody ever talks about the "white side" of Obama. How come?
Hetep and Respect Geminga, Everyone knows that Obama is a Multi-ethnic African American and I have talked about his European American heritage which, by his own mouth his is very proud of. Each ethnic group is rightfully proud of their connection with the President Elect. You should not be so sensitive.
Just off the top of my head Obama has Jewish American, Asian American and other ethnic/Religious groups in his family. You should be proud of yourself, asuming you voted for Obama, and your county whenever any of your country men are mentioned regardless of ethnicy.
If you peep at my column, you will note that I have written about most of them in my Political Cultural Poisoning Index series leading up to the election.
What about them "cracking the whip" to get the whitehouse finished?
Cultural Literacy Minute: mentioning whips and noses in conversations with African Americans can put you on dangerous cultural ground.
Is it your intention to offend African Americans?
My intention was to point out that he may be conflicted from time to time. I did not mention noses, you did. Whips were a terrible part of a dark past in our country. It is not a stretch to imagine that they may have been used, from time to time, building the whitehouse.
I will not take the bait in a "I can talk about this, but you can't," debate. I did vote for Obama and proudly so. Perhaps you shouldn't be so sensitive.
Hetep and Respect Geminga. Always good to meet someone on TeamAmerica, points well taken, thanks for your clarification.
My intention was to point out that he may be conflicted from time to time.
That is a reasonable assumption. Historically, I would tend to look at this mostly from the African American side, and in the interest of Cultural Literacy, restoring the knowledge of who built what in America. Obama has demonstrated his capacity to look at such situations from both sides and that is Culturally Healthy. Americans of every stripe will learn a lot about Cultural Health as we observe Obama navigate the cultural mind fields that will naturally come up.
The very fact that his Presidency is causing us to talk about such things, is likely to leave us both knowing more about the others cultural orientation than might otherwise be the case.
Thanx, Aunk.
