Palin, Republicans, NA's and Cultural Literacy

advertisement

I paused today to Google Palin with some keywords to see what was being said about her and Native issues. The last time I did this was a bit horrifying. There was a lot of "Her husband is Native, so she must support Native issues" kind of information, a flash-back to her gubernatorial campaign here in Alaska.

I will be the first to admit that I am Culturally Illiterate when it comes to Native Alaskans. Do you know when to use Eskimo and/or Youp'ik to describe a Alaska Native in a culturally healthy fashion? Well fasten your seat belt.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

From Daily Yonder, it would almost be funny, if it weren't so frustrating. Democratic Convention Native Delegates = 143 . Republican Convention Native Delegates? 1. No, that's not a typo. ONE. His name is Bobby , he's a Bible cover manufacturer, and he used to be a Democrat. Searching for signs of Native American life at the Republican Convention

McCain and his party do not seem to have a reputation or track record of unifying ethnic groups in our multi-ethnic nation. Palin and Alaskan Natives seem to be no exception.
